AAO Releases List of Urgent, Emergent Ophthalmic Procedures

Posted on

In response to the global pandemic, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) recently advised all ophthalmologists to provide treatment to only patients in need of urgent care. Today, in collaboration with several other ophthalmologic societies, AAO has provided a “master list” of procedures that are considered to be urgent or emergent.

AAO advises that this list does not cover all indications or potential procedures but are the one most commonly performed by ophthalmologists.

The Academy thanked the following societies for their help in developing this list:

American Association of Ophthalmic Oncologists and Pathologists
American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus
American Glaucoma Society
American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
American Society of Retina Specialists
Cornea Society

Procedures include canthotomy, evisceration, cataract surgery, laser indirect retinopexy – complex, and repair of anterior segment or cornea, amongst others. For the full list, visit the AAO website, here.
