No significant association found between alcohol intake and risk of diabetic retinopathy

Researchers analyzed data from 12,711 cases of diabetic retinopathy found in 15 studies, including 5 cohort studies, 4 case-control studies, and 6 cross-sectional studies. The pooled odds ratio showed no significant association between alcohol intake and diabetic retinopathy risk. The type of study did not change the risk.

The authors note that the lack of association may have been affected by population status, adjusted status, and study quality.

“This association should be verified in further large-scale, prospective studies, and [diabetic retinopathy] risk in relation to the dose and type of alcohol intake should also be explored,” they concluded.
