Refractive Surgery/Vision Correction

Keratectasia in Patients Undergoing ReLEx SMILE Procedure Evaluated

Posted on

Keratectasia did not appear to develop in patients undergoing the Refractive Lenticule Extraction SMILE procedure who had >40% of their tissue altered, according to an initial retrospective analysis presented at the 2018 World Ophthalmology Congress in Barcelona. Among the findings:

  • PTA values ranged between 29% and 53%.
  • Those with PTA <40% and >40% experienced similar visual acuity and manifest refraction.
  • Both groups showed a mean monocular uncorrected distance visual acuity of <0.05 LogMAR 1-year post-treatment.
  • Radius of curvature, Belin-Ambrósio Enhanced Ectasia Display, Corvis Biomechanical Index, and Tomographic Biomechanical Index values progressed similarly in both groups.

The presenters noted that prior studies show visual recovery from ReLEx SMILE is similar to Femto-LASIK, but that in the latter keratectasia can develop in those who had >40% of their tissue altered. They acknowledged that their findings need to be confirmed in larger studies.
