Refractive Surgery/Vision Correction

Predicting LASIK Surgery Candidacy

Posted on

In an assessment of the ability of air puff-derived biomechanical variables to predict LASIK candidacy, the hysteresis loop appeared to serve as the best predictor, according to a retrospective case series involving 93 individuals.

Participants from 2 surgeons at 2 centers included LAKIK candidates (n=46) as well those disqualified from having the procedure (n=47). Investigators calculated 3 custom biomechanical variables by group and surgeon. Among the results:

  • There were significant differences in the hysteresis loop area between disqualified cases and candidates.
  • The hysteresis loop area had the highest odds ratios for both surgeons.
