Corneal epithelial thickness mapping repeatability strong with novel swept-source OCT

Posted on

The repeatability of corneal epithelial thickness mapping (ETM) using a novel swept-source (SS) optical coherence tomographer (Anterion) is very high with strong correlation of the measurements with a validated spectral-domain (SD) optical coherence tomographer (Avanti), according to a poster presented at ASCRS 2022.

On 90 virgin eyes, 46 post-laser refractive surgery (PLRS) eyes, and 122 keratoconus eyes, 3 consecutive measurements with the SS-OCT Anterion and SD-OCT Avanti devices were done. ETM averages were calculated for the central 2-mm zone and in the 2-5- and 5-7-mm diameter rings.

Repeatability of Anterion ETM measurements
-Standard deviation: 0.60 – 1.36 μm
-Coefficient of variation: 1.12 – 2.58%
-Intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.928 – 0.997

The correlation between Anterion and Avanti was strong (R: 0.801 – 0.945; P < 0.001 for all), and 95% limit of agreement was − 0.826 – 8.297.

Thickness measurements values were lower with Anterion than Avanti with mean differences of 4.06 ± 1.81 μm for virgin eyes, 3.26 ± 2.52 μm for PLRS eyes, and 3.68 ± 2.51 μm for KC eyes (P < 0.001 for all)..

Due to the epithelium measurements, the use of Anterion and Avanti does not appear interchangeable without corrections.
