Triple DSAEK procedure without viscoelastic may improve outcomes
A modified approach to the triple Descemet’s stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) procedure, which omits the use of viscoelastic agents, has shown promising results in improving surgical outcomes, according to a study.
The study, involving patients with Fuchs’ dystrophy and lens opacification, demonstrated successful attachment of donor lamellae in all cases, with no occurrences of postoperative interface haze or other viscoelastic-related complications. This suggests that, when performed by a trained surgeon, the triple DSAEK procedure can be conducted without many associated complications.
The study, which included 10 eyes of 10 patients with Fuchs’ dystrophy and lens opacification, retrospectively reviewed the surgical procedures and outcomes. Capsulorhexis and IOL implantation, performed in locally potentiated anesthesia compared to general anesthesia, showed no significant difference (P > 0.05).
The mean preoperative best-corrected visual acuity was 0.75 LogMar, which improved to 0.2 LogMar postoperatively. Central graft thickness before surgery was measured at 129.6 μm, and 114.2 μm 6-month postoperatively.
