New Hydrophobic Aspheric IOL Evaluated

Posted on

A new monofocal hydrophobic aspheric intraocular lens (IOL) made of a glistening free hydrophobic material produced good functional outcomes and a precise power calculation, according to Mike P Holzer, MD, a professor in the department of ophthalmology at the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg in Germany. He presented his findings during the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery’s 2018 annual meeting in Washington, DC.

Investigators looked at IOL power calculation accuracy, refractive outcomes, and slit lamp findings in 50 eyes that received the new IOL. Among the results:

  • Normal IOL unfolding occurred in all surgeries, and there were no postoperative complications.
  • IOL power calculation showed a median deviation from intended refraction of 0.16 D.
  • Median corrected distance visual acuity improved from 0.25 logMAR to 0.0 logMAR postoperatively.
  • There was no IOL haze or glistening seen postoperatively.
