Study compares outcomes after KDB or iStent inject combined with phacoemulsification

Both Kahook Blade Dual (KDB) goniotomy and second-generation trabecular micro-bypass stent (iStent inject) are safe and effective microinvasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) options when combined with phacoemulsification, according to a study presented at ARVO 2023 that compared the procedures head-to-head.

In this single-center, observational, longitudinal case series, patients who underwent either of the MIGS procedures in combination with elective cataract extraction were included. The efficacy and safety of the procedures were evaluated by measuring intraocular pressure (IOP), IOP-lowering medications, and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) preoperatively and at various postoperative intervals.

The study found that both KDB and iStent inject were effective in reducing IOP, with clinically significant results. The reduction in IOP achieved by Phaco-KDB was found to be equivalent to that achieved by Phaco-iStent inject. Additionally, no major complications were observed during the study.
