The Challenges of Prosthetic Contact Lens Evaluations

Ocular disfigurement or asymmetry can be a sensitive topic to raise with patients, but the prosthetic contact lens solutions available can improve a patient’s social relationships and well-being, writes Marsha Malooley, OD, Director of Optometric Services at Chicago Cornea Consultants.

Dr. Malooley reviews the challenges of prosthetic evaluations, addresses why it’s important to consider patients’ psychological and emotional state, and provides fitting tips. She also explains the differences between the 3 types of prosthetic contact lenses: translucent-tinted, computer-generated, and hand-painted lenses. Finally, she addresses non-prosthetic applications.
