Dry Eye Symptom Relief After Using Intranasal Tear Neurostimulator

Posted on

The TrueTear intranasal tear neurostimulator  significantly improves dry eye symptoms after initial application and over time, according to a prospective, single-arm, open-label study involving 57 individuals. The results were presented by Michelle Senchyna, PhD, executive director of eye care at Allergan, during the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery’s 2018 annual meeting in Washington, DC.

Participants with dry eye disease used True Tear system for 45 days (between 2 and 10 times daily). They were exposed to a  controlled adverse environment at baseline and day 45. Investigators looked for dry eye symptoms and adverse events before and 5 minutes after using the system for ~3 minutes.  Among the results:

  • Average eye dryness score change before and after application on day 45 was -15.2.
  • This change at day 0 was -15.9.
  • Average ocular discomfort score change was -1.3 on both days 0 and 45.
  • There were 8 device-related adverse events.
  • 3 discontinued the trial early due to adverse events.
