Healthcare professionals call for more training on polygenic risk testing for glaucoma
Although healthcare professionals recognize the potential value of polygenic risk testing for glaucoma, there is a significant lack of familiarity and confidence in using the test, according to a study.
Researchers analyzed online survey responses from 94 participants, including ophthalmologists, optometrists, orthoptists, general practitioners, and genetic specialists.
Only 11% of participants were familiar with polygenic risk scores for glaucoma. However, most (91%) expressed a positive attitude towards recommending the test, particularly for patients with known risk factors like family history. In addition, 93% of respondents acknowledged the need for more training in polygenic risk scores to better support clinical decision-making. The study also found that most participants believed ophthalmologists were best suited to order and communicate the results of such tests.
