The Impact of Daily Disposable Contact Lens Use on the Aging Eye

Posted on

Use of a daily disposable contact lens in an older population induced changes in osmolarity and tear breakup time, but tear meniscus area and vital staining remained stable, according to a study involving 40 individuals with presbyopia.

Participants were fitted with the Delefilcon A daily contact lens. Investigators looked at tear osmolarity, tear meniscus area (TMA), and ocular surface aberrations at baseline, and after 20 minutes and 8 hours of wear. They also performed fluorescein corneal and conjunctival staining and evaluated tear breakup time at baseline and 8 hours. Among the results:

  • TMA was similar at all 3 time points.
  • Fluorescein corneal and conjunctival staining were similar at baseline and 8 hours.
  • Tear breakup time worsened from 10.4 to 9.0 seconds over 8 hours.
  • Osmolarity changed significantly between the first 2 time points (306.9 to 312.4 mOsmol/L) but normalized at 8 hours.
