Increasing Your Premium IOL Practice Requires More Than Surgical Know-How

Posted on

Increasing your premium IOL practice requires more than surgical know-how, said Vance Thompson, MD, founder of Vance Thomson Vision in North Dakota during the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery’s 2018 annual meeting in Washington, DC. Among his most important recommendations:

  • Provide realistic expectations. With cataracts being removed at younger ages than ever, it is important to let patients know that if their aim is 20/20 uncorrected distance vision, near and intermediate vision might be worse than it was preoperatively. “We don’t want this unexpected loss of near to overshadow their wonderful increase in clarity.”
  • Caring matters. In fact, patients want to know that you care before they want to know how much you know. That is why it is crucial to have a caring employee culture and experience.
  • Collect and digest satisfaction data. Not only patient satisfaction data, but employees, as well.
