Multifaceted approach improves glaucoma medication adherence

Posted on

Glaucoma medication adherence was improved in patients receiving glaucoma education, personalized management suggestions, and a reminder aid, according to a study.

In this randomized, controlled trial, patients who were medically treated for glaucoma who reported poor adherence received the multi-faceted intervention and the average proportion of prescribed doses taken on schedule was tracked for 6 months.

In patients receiving the intervention, the mean proportion of prescribed doses taken on schedule was higher than patients in a control arm who received only education regarding general eye health.

There were no differences in proportions when the groups were adjusted for companion status, frequency of dosing, and race. The longitudinal model found that in the first month after randomization, the intervention group had significantly higher adherence, which stayed higher through the study period.
