Dichoptic training improves visual acuity, stereoacuity in children with amblyopia

Dichoptic training that utilizes therapeutic modifications to streaming content chosen by the participant improved adherence over a 12-week period as well as visual acuity and stereoacuity in children with amblyopia, according to a study.  

In this single-arm, multicenter prospective pilot study, 90 patients between the ages of 4 and 12 years with anisometropic, strabismic, or mixed amblyopia were prescribed dichoptic treatment for 1 hour per day, 6 days/week for 12 weeks of at-home use. The primary endpoint was best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at 12-weeks. Overall, 81% of patients had prior treatment in addition to refractive correction.

There was a mean BCVA improvement from 0.50 logMAR to 0.35 logMAR in the amblyopic eye for patients who completed the study.

Mean stereoacuity improved by 0.28 log arcsec and median adherence was 86%.
