What are the most common IRDs in the United States?

Study data presented at AAO 2022 evaluated the prevalence of for inherited retinal degenerations (IRDs) in the United States. Keep reading to find out which diseases are the most common.

According to IRIS Registry, there were 613,912 new IRD diagnosis from 2013-2020. Approximately 84% of these diagnoses were for diseases of neurosensory retina and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). The second most common diagnosis accounting for 14% was choroidal diseases.

At a mean of 164 days from the initial IRD diagnosis, cataract occurred in 28%, cystoid macular edema in 3.4%, and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in 1.8%.

Most patients with choroideremia (67.1%) and achromatopsia (80.4%) were male. Best corrected visual acuity was worst for patients with choroideremia, with more than 6% being legally blind.
