Ultrasonic aspirator device comparable to traditional resection techniques

Use of an ultrasonic aspirator device during resection of spheno-orbital meningiomas had comparable outcomes to traditional resection techniques, according to a study published in Orbit.

A retrospective chart review of 7 patients with spheno-orbital meningioma who underwent surgical resection with the ultrasonic aspirator device, Sonopet (n = 9) were included.

Post-operative data showed that 89% of cases had stabilization or improvement of visual acuity and color vision. Visual field improvements were noted in 29% of cases, with the remainder remaining stable. All patients experienced improvement in proptosis.

New post-operative cranial nerve palsies were found in 44% of cases. Of those, 75% were transient.

Tumor recurrence occurred in 1 patient after 14 months, resulting in further tumor resection and radiotherapy.

The authors concluded that longer post-operative observation and follow-up is needed
