Reducing Wrong-Site Surgery in Pediatric Ophthalmology

Self-reported error in pediatric ophthalmology is not uncommon, but surgeons can employ specific tactics to minimize the risk, according to a recent study. Among the findings:

Marking the eye decreased the likelihood of wrong-site surgery by more than 60%. 
Errors were also reduced when one person led the time-out and more than one person checked time-out accuracy. 
Surgeons in practice for less than 15 years were 67% less likely than those in practice longer to perform wrong-site surgery. 
Number of surgeries performed annually and number of operating rooms used had no impact.
