Prevalence of Inflammation Biomarkers in Human Tears

Posted on

The TearLab Discovery system allows objective and rapid quantification of tear film biomarkers, according to a study involving ~250 individuals. The results were presented by Eric Donnenfeld, MD, National Medical Director of TLC Laser Eye Centers. He presented the findings during the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery’s 2018 annual meeting in Washington, DC.

Participants with dry eye disease completed the ocular surface disease index questionnaire. Investigators looked at tear breakup time, and conducted corneal fluorescein staining to grade for dry eye disease.

Osmolarity, matrix metalloproteinase 9, and interleukin-1 receptor antagonist  using a single collection of nano-liter tear sample in a point of care setting was shown to aid in assessment ocular surface health assessment.

Donnenfeld E. Multicenter US clinical study to evaluate prevalence of inflammation biomarkers in human tears.. Talk presented at: 2018 ASCRS-ASOA Annual Meeting; April 13-17, 2018; Washington, DC.
