This EDOF Lens Performed Better Than Other Premium IOLs
The Tecnis Symfony extended-depth-of-focus intraocular lens (IOL) performed better than other premium IOLs in both objective and subjective evaluations, due mainly to wide defocus tolerance, according to Carlos Palomino, MD, of the European University of Madrid, who presented his findings at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery’s 2018 annual meeting in Washington, DC.
Investigators objectively measured optical quality using the iTrace aberrometer in 60 participants who received one of the following lenses: TECNIS Symfony, FINEVISION, PANOPTIX, TECNIS ZMB00, TECNIS ZLB00 or ATLISA 939 (10 in each group). For the subjective assessment, researchers increased defocus progressively starting from best corrected visual acuity to create a perceptible 10% change acuity. Among the results:
- Depth of focus in diopters at 90% measured objectively for the six lenses were 0.444, 0.355, 0.405, 0.348, 1.00, and 0.316 D, respectively.
- The subjective measures were 1.52, 5.00, 1.21, 0.74, 1.00, and 0.45, respectively.
