Surgical experience doesn’t impact ICL implantation outcomes

Posted on

Surgeon experience level does not seem to impact clinical and visual outcomes after implantation of an implantable collamer lens (ICL) to correct myopic and astigmatic refractive error, according to a presentation at ASCRS 2022.

In this retrospective, consecutive study, the clinical outcomes of 50 consecutive patients (100 eyes) who underwent implantation with EVO Visian ICL by either an experienced or novice surgeon were measured at 1 day, 1 week, and 1 month. Baseline characteristics between groups was similar.

Patients treated by an experienced surgeon had a mean follow-up duration was 7.4 ± 5.6 weeks and those treated by a novice surgeon had a mean follow-up of 3.9 ± 3.8 weeks.

There was no difference in The Mean Absolute Error (MAE) between the experienced surgeon group and the novice surgeon group (0.21 ± 0.20 D vs 0.27 ± 0.19 D, P = 0.11).

Postoperative outcomes were similar between the groups, including uncorrected distance visual acuity, best-corrected distance visual acuity, endothelial cell density, spherical equivalent, and central vault. Neither group reported complications.
