Is there a link between vitamin D levels and age-related macular degeneration?

Posted on

In this systematic review, researchers evaluated the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D 25(OH)D levels and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

After reviewing medical databases for AMD or vitamin D related search terms, 18 observational studies with a total of 75,294 enrolled patients, were analyzed.

Researchers concluded that there is no clear evidence of an association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D 25(OH)D levels and AMD, although there appears to be a trend for late AMD among subjects with a serum 25(OH)D level below 50 nmol/L.
