Watch for These Subtle Changes in Pregnant Patients
Posted on
As pregnancy advances, watch for subtle physiologic, hormonal, and metabolic changes that can induce certain retinal and choroidal diseases, noted experts in a recent article. These deviations include:
- Increased serum cortisol.
- Increases in blood pressure during the third trimester.
- Increased blood volume.
- Insulin resistance with worsening glycemic control.
- Hypercoagulability.
Such changes can lead to hypertensive retinopathy and choroidopathy, exudative retinal detachment, and retinal vascular occlusive diseases.
