Online education increases ophthalmologists’ knowledge of emerging retinal disease treatments
Online medical education is an effective tool for increasing ophthalmologists’ knowledge and confidence in adopting new technologies for treating retinal diseases, according to a poster presented at the 24th Euretina Congress.
In the study, participating ophthalmologists completed pre- and post-assessments following a 45-minute online educational program. The program covered the rationale behind new technologies for treating retinal diseases, their mechanisms of action, and the latest clinical data. Results showed a significant increase in correct responses from 39% pre-assessment to 62% post-assessment, with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.91).
In addition, 54% of participants reported greater confidence in discussing these technologies with colleagues, and 71% were likely to consider implementing them for future patients.
The study underscores the effectiveness of online medical education in equipping ophthalmologists with up-to-date knowledge on emerging treatments, enabling early adoption and improved patient care.
