Office-based surgery is here to stay

Ophthalmology 360

Neel Vaidya, MD, MPH, MBA, of Chicago Cornea Consultants, spoke with Ophthalmology 360 at AAO 2025 about the need to offer ambulatory surgery centers that are premium boutique experiences for both the surgeons and patients.

Neel Vaidya, MD, MPH, MBA:

Hi, my name is Neel Vaidya. I’m a cataract, cornea, and refractive surgeon with Chicago Cornea Consultants and I’m one of the co-founders of SYT Surgical. I’m here to talk about office-based surgery today. If you’re keeping up with trends in ophthalmology, I’m sure you’ve heard about office-based surgery, and we think that office-based surgery really is here to stay in ophthalmology. My company SYT Surgical, we’re a soup to nuts surgical services company focusing on office-based surgery as well as ambulatory surgery center management, construction, accreditation, really, from the beginning to the end.

Our philosophy at SYT Surgical is that office-based surgery and ambulatory surgery centers for ophthalmology should be premium boutique experiences for both the surgeons and for the patients, and so we specialize in tailoring office-based surgery solutions, ambulatory surgery center solutions, for doctors to really help them complement each other and make sure that they have all the facility needs to serve their patients well.

As time goes on in ophthalmology, we’re facing a lot of pressures in a bunch of different directions, being squeezed out of hospitals, being squeezed out of multi-specialty ambulatory surgery centers, and so there really is a large need to have facilities that we own and control so that we can customize the experience to what fits our practice and ultimately what fits our patients. That’s what we strive to do at SYT Surgical. We can do consultations, help with architecture and design, planning, all the way through accreditation and management as cases are ongoing. Thanks to Ophthalmology 360 for the opportunity to talk about office-based surgery.
