Diabetic Macular Edema

Global survey highlights challenges in managing diabetic macular edema

Posted on

Managing diabetic macular edema in real-world clinical settings presents significant challenges, including logistical, financial, and communication barriers, which increase the burden on patients and clinics and contribute to suboptimal outcomes, according to a new study.

The study surveyed 3,752 patients with DME, 680 healthcare providers, and 1,249 clinic staff across 78 clinics in 24 countries, encompassing diverse healthcare systems and reimbursement models. Key challenges included the frequency of appointments, short treatment intervals, travel difficulties, out-of-pocket costs, and long waiting times. Patients also expressed a desire for more comprehensive discussions with providers to improve understanding and set realistic expectations.

The findings underline the need to address these barriers to improve patient adherence, reduce appointment burdens, and enhance clinic capacity.
