High-dose aflibercept stabilizes vision and reduces retinal thickness in diabetic macular edema
High-dose aflibercept can stabilize vision and reduce retinal swelling in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME), but many patients still require frequent injections and have persistent macular fluid, according to a study.
A retrospective study at the Cole Eye Institute evaluated the effects of high-dose aflibercept (8.0 mg) in 67 patients (100 eyes) with DME. Patients received ≥3 injections, with a focus on treatment intervals, retinal thickness, and visual acuity outcomes.
Mean central subfield thickness decreased significantly, while best-corrected visual acuity remained stable over a follow-up period of approximately 24 weeks. Nearly one-third of eyes could not maintain treatment intervals of 7 weeks or longer, with some requiring more frequent injections or switching therapies. Persistent macular fluid was observed in 90% of eyes.
