Does screen brightness effect digital visual acuity test accuracy?

Posted on

Online visual acuity (VA) tests appear to be comparable to the traditional Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) method in assessing visual acuity, according to a study.

The new research demonstrated that online VA tests, conducted using the Stanford Acuity Test (StAT) on devices like iPad Air2 and Microsoft Surface Pro4, produced results that were slightly better than those from the ETDRS method. The study also highlighted that variations in screen brightness and the choice of device had minimal clinical impact on VA results.

In addition, online VA tests were found to be time-efficient, requiring less testing time compared to the traditional ETDRS method. The researchers suggest that online VA tests could be a reliable and efficient alternative for assessing vision, potentially leading to advancements in remote vision assessments and diagnostics.
