Study finds higher mortality risk in patients with inherited retinal diseases
Patients with inherited retinal diseases (IRD) have a significantly higher risk of mortality compared to those without IRD, according to a poster presented at AAO 2024.
In this retrospective cohort study, electronic health records from January 2014 to January 2023 were used to compare overall survival rates between patients with IRD and those without. Researchers matched 4,594 patients with IRDs with 9,188 controls using propensity score matching.
Patients with IRD had a 24% higher risk of death from all causes over a 7-year period compared to controls. Overall survival rates were 95.8% for patients with IRD versus 96.7% for non-IRD controls.
