Allogeneic eye drops outperform autologous drops in treating dry eye symptoms in Sjögren’s syndrome
Allogeneic serum eye drops provide better relief from severe dry eye symptoms in patients with Sjögren’s syndrome (SS) compared to autologous serum eye drops, according to a study.
In the study, 5 patients with SS, who had used allogeneic serum eye drops for 5-28 months and autologous serum eye drops for at least 2 years, were analyzed. The assessment utilized Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) scores and internal questionnaires to compare the efficacy of both treatments.
Results found that the mean OSDI score improved significantly with the use of allogeneic serum eye drops. The mean OSDI score dropped from 68.71 with autologous serum eye drops to 30.49 with allogeneic serum eye drops, suggesting that patients with SS experienced better symptom relief with allogeneic serum eye drops compared to autologous serum eye drops.
