Key insights from global survey point to improvements needed in nAMD clinical care
A recent multinational survey sought to identify key barriers and opportunities in the clinical management of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), gathering insights from patients, providers, and clinic staff across diverse healthcare systems. The survey spanned 24 countries across 6 continents, with responses from 4,558 patients, 659 providers, and 1,208 clinic staff. Participants answered anonymous single- and multiple-response questions addressing patient demographics, treatment experiences, appointment attendance barriers, and potential improvements in care delivery.
Key Findings:
The survey found several challenges affecting nAMD management:
- Patient Concerns: Frequent treatments, reliance on family or friends for support, travel difficulties, and limited understanding of nAMD.
- Provider and Clinic Struggles: Long waiting times, clinic setup inefficiencies, and insufficient time with patients.
Participants highlighted areas to enhance care:
- Logistical: Increased financial assistance, reduced out-of-pocket costs, and effective appointment reminders.
- Operational: Streamlined clinic workflows to minimize waiting times and improve provider-patient interaction.
- Educational: Enhanced patient education and realistic expectation-setting regarding nAMD treatment.
