Long-term study shows sustained benefits of intravitreal aflibercept in neovascular AMD
Intravitreal aflibercept 2 mg provides sustained, long-term improvements in vision and retinal thickness for patients with treatment-naïve neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) over 36 months in real-world clinical practice, with no new safety concerns reported, according to a study.
The XTEND study followed treatment-naïve patients (N = 1483) treated with Intravitreal aflibercept 2 mg for 3 years. Visual acuity improvements were observed early, with mean gains of +4.6 letters at 12 months, +2.3 at 24 months, and +0.9 at 36 months. Central subfield thickness, a measure of retinal swelling, decreased consistently over the study period by around 106–110 μm.
Patients received an average of 7.7 injections in the first year, increasing to 13.7 injections over three years. No new safety concerns were reported.
The findings suggest that long-term visual benefits with intravitreal aflibercept are achievable in routine clinical practice for patients with newly diagnosed nAMD.
