Ocular Surface Disease

SANDE Questionnaire provides different patient classifications than OSDI score

Posted on

There are significant differences between the results obtained from the Symptom Assessment iN Dry Eye (SANDE) questionnaire and the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) when assessing dry eye symptoms in patients, according to a study, which found that the SANDE questionnaire, which utilizes a visual analog scale, provided divergent patient classifications compared to the OSDI score.

The results showed significant disparities between the normalized and non-normalized scores of the SANDE questionnaire in comparison to the OSDI in a large sample of 1033 patients.

Both sets of SANDE scores were consistently higher across all samples. In non-DES cases, the differences were not statistically significant, while in DES cases, the disparities were significant. Weak correlations were observed in most cases, except for DES where the correlation was notably low.

Furthermore, Bland-Altman analysis revealed weak agreement between the normalized and non-normalized scores of both questionnaires. The mean difference ranged from -7.67 to -1.33 for DES patients, and from -9.21 to -0.85 for non-DES patients. The relationship between the scores was statistically significant.

The SANDE questionnaire did not align with the patient classifications obtained from OSDI scores. This suggests that the two tools may be assessing dry eye symptoms differently.
