Financial burden of Sjögren’s syndrome may lead to lack of adherence
A recent anonymous self-administered survey of individuals with Sjögren’s syndrome-related dry eye disease (SS-DED) found the cost of therapy and forgetting to administer drops were the most common reasons for lack of adherence. Approximately 83% of respondents said they would ration drops to reduce the cost of therapy.
In this Canadian-based survey, only 3% of individuals had private insurance for non-prescription agents for DED treatment.
Other interesting findings from the survey include:
-Nearly all (80%) were worried about reduced quality of life because of DED
-More than half reported fear of blindness
-A quarter said they wouldn’t tell their eye care provider about non-adherence
