New research highlights frequency and distribution of ocular surgeries in patients with IRD
There is a significant prevalence of ocular surgeries among patients with inherited retinal diseases (IRDs), with approximately one-third of patients having undergone such procedures, according to a study.
Cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation (CEIOL) emerged as the most common surgery, indicating the impact of IRDs on ocular health and the need for surgical intervention.
The study included 736 adult patients diagnosed with IRDs. The participants were categorized into 2 groups based on the nature of their retinal dysfunction: those with central dysfunction (macular/cone/cone-rod dystrophy) and those with panretinal or peripheral dysfunction (retinitis pigmentosa-like). The medical records of these individuals were analyzed to assess the occurrence of laser and incisional surgeries, with a particular focus on cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation (CEIOL), the most prevalent procedure.
The findings revealed that 31.3% of the participants had undergone ocular surgery, with 78.3% of them having a history of multiple surgeries. Among the 602 surgical procedures analyzed, CEIOL emerged as the most common, accounting for 51.2% of all surgeries. Other procedures included YAG capsulotomy, refractive surgery, and retinal surgery.
The study found disparities in the frequency and timing of surgeries between the 2 phenotypic groups. Patients with retinitis pigmentosa were more likely to undergo CEIOL compared to those with central dysfunction, with a prevalence odds ratio (POR) of 2.59. Furthermore, Patients with retinitis pigmentosa underwent CEIOL at a younger age than those with macular/cone/cone-rod dystrophy, indicating potential differences in disease progression and clinical management.
