Short-term intraocular pressure control in uveitis glaucoma linked to high recurrence rates
Xen45 gel stents can help temporarily lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with uveitis-related glaucoma, but more than half of the cases eventually require additional interventions, according to a poster presented at AAO 2024.
Researchers conducted a retrospective review of cases from 2017 to 2023, focusing on IOP, visual acuity, and medication use before and after Xen stent implantation.
The study included 30 patients, most of whom had primary anterior uveitis. Preoperative IOP averaged 39 mmHg, which decreased to 15 mmHg 1 month after surgery. However, 53% of patients experienced stent failure, with an average time to failure of 15 months. Nine patients required a second glaucoma procedure within a year of the initial implantation.
The findings suggest that while Xen45 gel stents can offer short-term pressure control
