Combined light therapy shows promise for treating Demodex-associated blepharitis
Combined intense pulsed light (IPL) and low-level light therapy is a safe and effective treatment for patients with Demodex-associated blepharitis that does not respond to standard therapies, leading to significant improvement in both clinical signs and patient symptoms without reported adverse effects, according to a study.
Researchers reviewed records from 17 patients (34 eyes) whose Demodex-associated blepharitis did not respond to standard therapies. Participants underwent an average of 8 treatment sessions involving IPL, along with 12 minutes of blue light followed by 12 minutes of red light.
The dual light approach led to significant improvements across multiple measures. Signs such as collarettes, lid margin saponification, conjunctival redness, and corneal staining all decreased after treatment, while dry eye symptoms improved on the DEQ-5 questionnaire. No treatment-related adverse events were reported.
