Enhanced monofocal lens improves intermediate vision in children after cataract surgery
Enhanced monofocal intraocular lens (IOLs) in children with cataracts improve intermediate vision (beyond 1 meter) compared to standard monofocal lenses, but they do not lessen the need for near vision correction, according to a study.
Researchers evaluated 45 eyes in patients aged 6 to 13 years and randomly assigned them to receive either the Tecnis Eyhance (enhanced monofocal) or the Tecnis ZCB00 (standard monofocal) IOL. Both groups showed similar uncorrected and corrected vision at distance, intermediate, and near, as well as comparable spectacle power requirements for near tasks 3 months after surgery.
However, defocus curve analysis found that the Eyhance group achieved significantly better visual acuity through the intermediate range, particularly at distances beyond 1 meter (P < 0.01). The lens did not reduce the need for near vision correction.
