Geographic Atrophy

Standard and ultrawide field imaging show similar geographic atrophy progression but differ in size measurements

Posted on

Although standard fundus autofluorescence (FAF) imaging tends to measure larger areas of geographic atrophy (GA) than ultrawide field (UWF) FAF, both methods show similar rates of GA progression over time, according to a study.

The analysis included 73 participants with GA who had images taken with both Heidelberg Spectralis (standard FAF) and Optos 200Tx (UWF FAF) at 2 time points, 5 years apart. The average baseline GA area was slightly larger with standard FAF (5.32 mm²) compared to UWF FAF (4.79 mm²), with a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001). However, GA progression rates were similar over the 5-year period, with a median growth rate of 1.28 mm² per year for standard FAF and 1.34 mm² for UWF FAF.

The findings indicate that while GA measurements tend to be larger with standard FAF, both imaging methods show comparable progression rates.
