Using a method that takes only corneal front keratometric values into account can result in postoperative undercorrection of astigmatism, researchers concluded after conducting a study involving 64 individuals.

Participants had a toric IOL (Zeiss Torbi 709 M) implanted after cataract surgery. Investigators compared how a standard calculator and the Barrett calculator predicted postoperative refraction and toric lens power values. Among the results:

  • There was a 0.19 D undercorrection in the spherical equivalent using the standard calculator.
  • Undercorrection of the cylinder was lower for patients who had with-the-rule astigmatism, due to the tendency of overcorrection.
  • Less residual postoperative spherical equivalent, sphere, and cylinder were seen with the Barrett calculator when compared with the standard calculator.
