Iris-Claw Intraocular Lens Evaluated

The Artisan aphakia iris-claw intraocular lens (IOL) offered good visual outcomes and few complications, according to a retrospective case series involving 95 individuals. 

Participants received pre- (n=57) or retropupillary (n=38) implantation, mainly for IOL or lens luxation or subluxation, trauma, or aphakia. Investigators looked at corrected distance visual acuity, anatomical changes, endothelial cell count, cystoid macular edema presence, and operative and postoperative complications. Among the results: 

  • Corrected distance visual acuity improved significantly in both groups.
  • Endothelial cell counts were reduced in both groups. 
  • Cystoid macular edema incidence was 16% overall; the reduction was not significantly different between the 2 groups. 
  • Other postop complications were rare and no differences were found between groups.
