Sutureless Flanged IOL Fixation May be Efficient Alternative to Conventional Treatment for IOL Dislocation

Similar visual outcomes and shorter operating times may make sutureless flanged intraocular lens (IOL) fixation an efficient alternative to sutured scleral fixation (SF) for the treatment of IOL dislocation, according to a study in Ophthalmologica.

In this prospective comparative cohort study, patients who had vitrectomy with IOL removal and sutured SF (53 eyes) or flanged IOL fixation (50 eyes), were included.

In the patients that had flanged IOL fixation, operating time was significantly shorter than for those who had sutured SF (19.4 ± 4.6 vs 48.9 ± 5.2 minutes, P < 0.001). At 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively, best-corrected visual acuity was similar and there was no difference in the refractive difference, IOL tilt and decentration, and postoperative complications between the groups.

Visual outcomes and IOL stability were comparable between patients who had sutured SF and those who had flanged IOL fixation. The authors concluded that flanged IOL fixation may be an efficient alternative technique for the treatment of IOL dislocation due to the decreased operating time.
