Peripheral retinal degenerations more easily identified with UWF SS-OCT

Ultra-widefield swept source optical coherence tomography (UWF SS-OCT) significantly improves the diagnosis of peripheral retinal degenerations by providing detailed imaging of retinal structures, enabling early detection of potentially vision-threatening conditions that are often missed during routine ophthalmoscopy, according to a study.

The study analyzed 100 eyes with 14 different peripheral retinal lesions, the most common being lattice degeneration (31%) and snail track lesions (10.4%). All lesions were imaged successfully using UWF-OCT, which revealed structural details, such as vitreoretinal attachments, retinal tears, and sub-retinal fluid that were difficult to detect through traditional ophthalmoscopy.

The findings suggest that UWF-OCT enhances diagnostic accuracy and allows for early identification of potentially vision-threatening conditions
