Global AS-OCT research surges, highlighting growth in AI and imaging innovation

Ophthalmology 360

A new bibliometric review shows rapid and sustained growth in global research on anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) for corneal disease, charting how the field has expanded and where it is heading next.

The analysis examined 2,079 English-language publications from 1994 to 2024 from the Web of Science database.

AS-OCT output was found to have risen sharply over time. The United States led with 639 publications and nearly 20,000 citations, followed by China. The University of California emerged as the most prolific institution. The foundational AS-OCT paper was published in 1994, and the most cited work traced back to Huang and colleagues’ 1991 report on optical coherence tomography.

Current research trends center on artificial intelligence, deep learning, and optical coherence elastography. Major publication venues include Cornea, Journal of Refractive Surgery, and Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
