Study compares tear meniscus measurements in patients with low vitamin D levels
Vitamin D insufficiency may significantly lower tear meniscus height and depth, along with less favorable OSDI, Schirmer, and tear break-up time (TBUT) scores, compared with healthy controls, according to a study.
The study included 34 patients with low vitamin D levels and 34 healthy controls.
Tear meniscus height (TMH) served as the primary outcome.
Both groups showed values within normal ranges for OSDI, TBUT, and Schirmer testing. However, participants with vitamin D insufficiency had significantly higher OSDI scores and significantly lower TBUT and Schirmer values compared with controls (P < 0.05). Tear meniscus height and tear meniscus depth (TMD) were also significantly reduced in the low vitamin D group (TMH: P = 0.033; TMD: P = 0.041). No significant differences were found in the percentage of area covered by particles or turbidity.
