Case Report: Aflibercept’s unilateral impact on contralateral wet AMD eye
A new case report has shown that unilateral treatment with intravitreal aflibercept injections (IAIs) in one eye of a patient with bilateral wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) led to unexpected improvements in the untreated fellow eye.
The 72-year-old patient exhibited wet AMD in her right eye (OD) and dry AMD in her left eye (OS). The treatment strategy involved 3 monthly IAIs in the right eye, followed by re-injections as needed. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans were performed before each IAI to monitor disease progression.
One month after the second IAI, the left eye developed subretinal fluid. An IAI was administered in the right eye, and after 2 days, the left eye was reevaluated and showed the subretinal fluid in the left eye completely resolved with no signs of leakage, indicating the absence of active choroidal neovascularization.
The short interval between the IAI in the right eye and the resolution of exudative phenomena in the left eye suggests a potential beneficial effect in the untreated eye.
