Glaucoma

MMC concentration appears to play role in Microshunt procedure outcomes

Posted on

A higher intraoperative concentration of mitomycin C (MMC) was associated with a reduced risk of failure to maintain both complete and overall success after Microshunt implantation in patients with glaucoma.

Other risk factors for failure included specific types of glaucoma (pseudoexfoliation glaucoma/pigmentary glaucoma, primary angle closure glaucoma), previous non-glaucomatous ocular surgeries, lower preoperative IOP, a higher number of preoperative antiglaucoma agents, and Microshunt combined with cataract surgery.

The study involved 250 eyes from 220 consecutive patients with glaucoma who underwent Microshunt implantation.

The study found varying success rates ranging from 43.3% to 62.5% for different criteria at the 1-year follow-up. An MMC concentration of 0.4 mg/mL compared to 0.2 mg/mL demonstrated significantly lower hazard ratios, emphasizing the importance of MMC dosage during surgery.

The findings underscore the critical role of intraoperative MMC concentration in optimizing surgical success.
