Head-to-head study highlights differences between EDoF intraocular lenses
Key Takeaways
- Clareon Vivity provided stronger intermediate vision and greater optical stability after cataract surgery.
- TECNIS PureSee showed an early advantage in near vision while delivering similar overall visual outcomes.
Clareon Vivity and TECNIS PureSee extended depth of focus intraocular lenses both delivered strong visual outcomes following cataract surgery, but a new head-to-head analysis found differences in intermediate and near vision performance that may influence lens selection for specific patient needs.
The retrospective cohort study evaluated 106 eyes from 72 patients who underwent phacoemulsification with implantation of either the Clareon Vivity or TECNIS PureSee intraocular lens. Investigators assessed outcomes over a 3-month postoperative period.
Both lenses significantly improved uncorrected distance visual acuity. Clareon Vivity provided better intermediate vision at 80 cm at both 1 and 3 months after surgery, while delivering similar vision at closer intermediate and near distances compared with TECNIS PureSee. It also showed a wider range of clear focus and more stable optical performance over time. The lens also showed a broader defocus range and lower total coma values with less variability.
TECNIS PureSee produced similar refractive and contrast sensitivity outcomes and showed better monocular near visual acuity at 40 cm during the first postoperative month.
The authors concluded that Clareon Vivity may offer advantages for patients seeking more stable intermediate vision and broader defocus tolerance, while TECNIS PureSee may benefit patients prioritizing early near focus.
