Long-term IOP control with SLT similar in patients with POAG, regardless of stent use

Posted on

Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) effectively reduces intraocular pressure (IOP) in pseudophakic primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients, regardless of whether they have a trabecular bypass stent (TBS, iStent), according to a study presented at AAO 2024. However, the researchers noted that SLT does not enhance the stent’s long-term efficacy in IOP control.

In this retrospective review, 69 eyes with TBS and 69 matched control eyes without TBS were assessed. Both groups experienced a significant IOP reduction 2 months after SLT. However, by 18 months, only the control group maintained statistically significant IOP improvements. At both the 2- and 18-month marks, there were no significant differences in IOP between the groups.

Although medication use remained similar between groups at baseline and 2 months post-SLT, the TBS group required more medications at 18 months compared to controls.
