SmartLOAD technology aims to reduce surgical waste in ophthalmology

Ophthalmology 360

Johnson & Johnson Vision has introduced SmartLOAD, a preloaded intraocular lens (IOL) delivery system designed to reduce environmental impact during cataract surgery. According to recent data, the system produces nearly 80% less waste compared to current systems in the U.S.

This innovation is part of a broader effort to address the healthcare sector’s contribution to environmental waste and carbon emissions.

The technology integrates the SENSAR 1-Piece IOL with the UNFOLDER Vitan inserter, offering a more efficient and sustainable approach to lens implantation. As hospitals and health systems increasingly commit to climate action pledges, the new system represents a practical step toward greener surgical practices without compromising clinical outcomes.

The product also adheres to stringent safety protocols, with guidance on proper handling, storage, and implantation to avoid contamination and adverse events.

Johnson & Johnson Vision continues to align its innovations with its corporate sustainability goals and broader healthcare sector pledges toward climate responsibility
